Tokyo Novyi Repertory Theatre
Tokyo Novyi Repertory Theatre Blog Letter of Recommendation for Tokyo Novyi Repertory Theatre Written by: Dr. Kyozo Takei, Professor of Japanese Literature Tokyo Novyi Repertory Theatre is a theatre group that was founded in 2004. It consists of NPO Dramatic Company Kyo (founded in 1988) as the parent body), and Perezhivanie Art Theatre (founded in 2000) and Studio Sontse, which were born from master classes directed by an honored artist of Russia, Leonid Anisimov. The Repertory Theatre has performed modern classical plays such as The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, and The Love Suicides at Sonezaki by Monzaemon Chikamatsu. They are directed by Mr. Anisimov and supported by Housei Kudo, who is in charge of make-up and wigs. I saw almost every play, and paid special attention to their quality. Of the six plays they have performed, The Love Suicides at Sonezaki has an outstanding result, which I believe can only be obtained with the sensibility of a foreign director. The play is performed on a darkly lit stage. By using dim lighting from lanterns and sharply colored red costumes effectively, the Repertory Theatre has created a world of beauty for Chikamatsu, which no one has been able to discover on the stages of Kabuki and Bunraku. This reminds me of the perspective of foreigners who for the first time visited Japan during the Meiji Period, and the impression of Rembrandt's art work is woven into the play so that the peculiar harmony of West and East esthetics are born here. This group has adopted the Stanislavski System as an acting method. Recently, the system has not been considered the latest method, yet with the direction of Mr. Anisimov, a new aspect is added and has been reborn as an acting method for Japanese actors. Young actors of this group are well trained, and many of them have a high level of concentration. In The Love Suicides at Sonezaki they have expressed true sentiments: pitifulness and imprudence of a young man and woman. The young actors physical bodies are well resonated with these elements of the play. It is today's common knowledge among scholars that during the Edo Period the only adaptations of this play that were performed were considered detrimental amendments. Even the production of The Love Suicides at Sonezaki rewritten into the form of Kabuki and Bunraku by Nobuo Uno during the post war period does not touch the real nature of the original written by Chikamatsu. Because Mr. Anisimov's direction is free from the history of past performances, his version of The Love Suicides at Sonezaki has touched the true essence of Chikamatsu. The heart of Chikamatsu, rediscovered by a foreign director, and given an opportunity to be exposed abroad, will, I believe, be further polished and will shine as a form of theatre art. Therefore, I hereby recommend Tokyo Novyi Repertory Theatre.
